37On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
You can tell that John wrote his Gospel account of Jesus post-ascension because he says in verse 39 that Jesus had not been glorified. The glorification of Jesus happened on the Day of Ascension (Acts 1:9-11). Glorification of Jesus is important because only after Christ's glorification is the Spirit of God released on all flesh.
The Spirit is key: key to applying the ministry and work of Jesus to believers, key to knowing God, key to experiencing all the benefits brought about by Jesus crucified, key to simply being a genuine follower of Christ. Without the Spirit working in us, we have Christianity as mere religion with teaching, ritual, and customs. But with the Spirit, we have "rivers of living water" flowing through our hearts.
Therefore, walking with the Spirit (Galatians 5:16) is the core of our daily relationship with God. With the Spirit in us, we are connected to the Creator and Redeemer, Lord and Savior, Friend and Lover, very God, Immanuel, God with us.
Let's stay connected to the Triune God and in sync with what God is doing in our lives!
Let's pray: Lord Jesus, we thank you for the promise of the Spirit of God, that after your glorification the Spirit would be poured out on those who believe. And because of the Spirit, rivers of living water are flowing through us! To be alive in you means that the Spirit is alive in us. Help us to be sensitive to your Spirit and, more importantly, to be obedient to the Spirit's leading as we stay connected with you through our love and friendship. In your name, amen.
